Sustainable packaging, with the limits stated out loud

Flexible packaging uses dramatically less material than the rigid packaging it replaces, and it is dramatically harder to recycle. Both of those are true, and a supplier who only tells you one of them is selling you something.

The honest starting position

A stand-up pouch uses a small fraction of the material of the glass jar or steel can it replaces, ships flat, weighs less in transit and creates less waste by mass. On material use and transport emissions, flexible packaging wins clearly and it is not close.

At end of life it loses, because a multi-material laminate cannot easily be separated back into its polymers and is not collected in most kerbside systems. Anyone who describes a conventional laminate as sustainable without qualifying that is describing half the picture.

Our position is that you should hear both halves, get told which of your SKUs can move to a recycle-ready structure today, and be given the cost difference in writing so it is a business decision rather than a slogan.

What we can offer today

Mono-material PE and PP laminates now cover a large share of dry, chilled and frozen applications and are accepted in store drop-off polyethylene film streams in the United States. They run on existing fill lines with a sealing temperature adjustment and cost modestly more per unit.

Recycle-compatible shrink sleeves — floatable or fully perforated — release from PET bottles in the wash step so the flake stays clean, which matters for any brand with a bottle circularity commitment.

Down-gauging is the least glamorous and most reliable improvement available. Films have become stiffer and stronger, and many specifications still carry gauges set years ago. Removing ten microns from a sealant across a year of volume is a genuine material reduction with no barrier consequence, and it saves you money at the same time.

What we cannot honestly claim yet

High-barrier retort structures, very long ambient shelf lives with hard oxygen limits, and applications requiring aluminium foil are not currently served by mono-material alternatives at commercial performance. We will say so rather than sell you a structure that fails.

Compostable is a word that needs care. A PLA-based film composts in an industrial facility, not in a garden and not in a landfill, and industrial composting is not available to most consumers. A compostable claim on a pack that will be landfilled achieves nothing except a marketing risk.

And a recyclable claim depends on collection, not only on material. A recycle-ready pouch in a region with no film collection is still landfill. We give you the structure and the accurate description; what appears on the pack is your legal team's decision.

A practical path

Map the SKU list. Sort by shelf life requirement and process severity. Convert the short-shelf-life, low-process SKUs to mono-material now — that is usually the majority of a portfolio by unit count.

Down-gauge everything where the current specification is older than the film technology. Move sleeves to recycle-compatible on any bottle with a circularity claim. Then keep the high-barrier and retort SKUs under review, because this field moves genuinely fast.
