Stand-Up Zipper Pouches (Doypack)

The format that turned a bag into a package: a pouch that stands on the shelf, recloses in the customer's hand and gives you a full-colour front panel to sell from.

Why the stand-up pouch keeps taking shelf space from rigid packaging

A stand-up pouch weighs a fraction of the jar, can or box it replaces, ships flat until it is filled, and gives the brand a billboard the shape of the product rather than the shape of a label. For most dry, ambient and frozen categories it is now the default rather than the alternative.

The commercial argument is not only material cost. A pallet of empty pouches carries several times the number of units of a pallet of jars, which changes your inbound freight and your warehouse footprint. And a resealable zipper converts a single-use purchase into a pantry item the shopper keeps on the counter — which is where repeat purchase actually comes from.

What the format does not forgive is a badly chosen structure. A pouch is a barrier, a seal and a stiffness all at once; get the stiffness wrong and it will not stand, get the barrier wrong and your product goes stale inside its printed billboard.

Barrier, mono-material and the honest trade-off

The traditional high-barrier doypack is PET / metallized PET / PE, or PET / aluminium foil / PE where oxygen has to be kept out completely. These structures work, they are inexpensive, and they are extremely hard to recycle because the layers are different polymer families glued together.

The mono-material alternative is an all-PE or all-PP laminate, sometimes with a transparent barrier coating or an EVOH tie layer thin enough to stay inside recycling thresholds. It is recycle-ready in store drop-off streams, it runs on the same fill lines with a sealing temperature adjustment, and it costs modestly more per pouch today.

Where the honest conversation happens is barrier. A mono-PE structure is excellent for pasta, granola, pet treats, frozen fruit and most snack categories. It is not yet the right answer for a twenty-four-month ambient coffee with a hard oxygen limit. We will map your SKUs and tell you which ones can move now.

Features that change how the pouch is used, not just how it looks

Press-to-close zippers, slider zippers, child-resistant zippers, tin ties, hang holes, round-corner dies, laser tear lines, transparent windows in any shape, one-way degassing valves for coffee, spouts and fitments for liquids, and matte finishes with spot-gloss detail are all part of the same conversation.

Each of these decisions has a machine consequence. A zipper adds a track that your filler has to open and close cleanly. A valve needs a flat mounting area on the back panel. A window changes where you can print the barcode. We work these out on the drawing before the die is cut, because a die is not editable.

The finishing is where a pouch stops looking like a commodity. Soft-touch matte varnish with a gloss-registered logo, cold foil under a transparent colour, or a metallized substrate with a knocked-out white are inexpensive relative to their shelf impact — and they are the reason a private-label shopper picks yours.

Frequently asked questions about stand-up zipper pouches

Yes. If you run a horizontal or vertical form-fill-seal machine, we supply the printed and laminated film on rolls slit to your web width and core, with the eye mark and repeat set for your machine. Many customers buy both: rollstock for the high-volume SKU and made pouches for the small ones.

It is recycle-ready, which is the accurate word. An all-PE laminate is accepted in store drop-off polyethylene film streams in the United States; it is not accepted in most kerbside bins, because kerbside systems generally do not sort flexible film at all. We will give you the structure and let your claims team decide what can be printed on the pack.

For a printed doypack, the practical floor is normally 10,000 to 20,000 pouches per design depending on size, plus one-time tooling. Below that, digitally printed short runs are sometimes the better route and we will say so rather than quote you an uneconomic gravure job.

That depends on the bottom gusset geometry and the film stiffness, and it is exactly the kind of thing that gets discovered too late. We build sample pouches in the proposed structure and fill them with your product at your target weight before the production die is committed.
